Giving & Receiving Feedback as a Tech Leader
Speakers
Tech Leadership Trainer
Summary
A practical, 2-hr online workshop on delivering specific, actionable feedback using the SBIBI model. For Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, and Staff Engineers.
Details
Most feedback can fall into different buckets:
- Too vague without recalling specific enough examples, which doesn’t create discussion and difficult to get the other person to make any changes
- Lots of positive and not enough negative comments that don't change anything
- Not structured and clear as to what the other person should do
This 2-hour online workshop gives you a structured model for delivering feedback that’s specific, actionable, and actually drives behaviour change and action, plus techniques for receiving feedback without taking it too personally.
The Problem
Tech leaders avoid feedback until it becomes a performance issue or they start to see it affecting their team's work and culture. Feedback is a powerful tool. It's an opportunity to have a conversation and explore what behaviours you want to see more of and what's not working well. When feedback is given without thought and a plan, it reduces trust, you don't move forwards with your team, and frustration builds up as the expectations aren't clear.
Who This Is For
- Engineering managers giving feedback to direct reports for the first time
- Tech leads navigating peer feedback without positional authority
- Staff engineers mentoring juniors who need structured, honest guidance
- Senior engineers stepping into leadership and realising "just be direct" isn't a strategy/plan
What You'll Walk Away With
- Understanding the different types of feedback and how they produce different effects
- How to delivery feedback that's specific and actionable without triggering defensiveness using the SBIBI model
- Preparing for the conversation to structure your session and get your mindset in the right place
- Techniques for making feedback resonate, and how to handle feedback you disagree with
- Practice exercises with Andrew and the group
How It Works
- 2-hour live online session (Zoom)
- Teaching block on models and frameworks, then real practice in group activity
- You’ll leave with the Actionable Feedback Worksheet to use in your next feedback conversation
- Q&A with Andrew
