How do you become a great technical leader?

Don't forget the soft skills

Soft skills are not spoken about often enough in the technology space. Yet, this combined with your technical expertise will make you a better leader.

  • Communicate confidently with your team and your peers.
  • Lead your team for better performance and productivity.
  • Understand your role in the wider business context.
  • Have empathy for your team and see improved engagement.
  • Learn new mindsets to drive positive culture change.

Meet
Andrew Murphy

Head geek, public speaker and technical leadership coach.

I started out writing code using a ZX Spectrum and over the span of my career I went from being a software developer to a manager to a lead and now a Head Geek, Technical Leadership Coach and Public Speaker.

Over the years, I've put a lot of emphasis on the personal and professional development of technical leaders.

This is where my passion lies.

In my experience, a brilliant technical mind is great but writing better code is not the answer as we progress in our careers.

We need more than our technical skills.

I'm talking about the soft skills that most of us ignore (communication, leadership, presentation, influencing, team work skills, balancing code with the business needs, managing conflict and solving business needs).

Through workshops, one-to-one coaching, group mentoring and public speaking, I enjoy helping others understand the real role of a technical leader within today's business environment.

Andrew gave a very insightful talk at the recent Elabor8 event on ‘The power of saying I don’t know’. Very relevant to today’s workplaces where individuals are instantly judged for simply saying ‘I don’t know’. I really enjoyed Andrew’s anecdotal approach and appreciated him sharing his tips on getting around the subject. Thank you Andrew.
